Pavilion's Light Up Chinese Checkers Board Game Review

Pavilion's Light Up Chinese Checkers Board Game Review

I recently received Pavilion's Light Up Chinese Checkers Board Game from Toys R Us for review.  This is a slight variation from traditional Chinese Checkers...obviously the game board lights up, using 6 AA batteries (not included).  The next difference you will find is that there are no marbles, instead you have colored pieces that resembles chess pawns.  There are no little slots for these pawns, just colored circles to correspond to the colored pieces.  The game is for 2-6 players, suitable for ages 6 and up.

Game comes with items shown above, plus instructions on game play.

My son and I sat played a couple of rounds of this new version of Chinese Checkers.  We enjoyed that the pieces were easier to keep hold of, unlike rolly-poly marbles.  I appreciated also that the board is not cardboard to fold up and put away - I hate how the seams wear out and can tear on those types of game boards.  This is a plastic board, that is also smaller than the traditional game's version.  We often sit on the floor to play, so it was nice to have more room and not be scrunched up against the furniture.

Game in Progress may look like photo above.

If you have never enjoyed a game of Chinese Checkers, you are missing out on a fun game of strategy.  It is similar to regular checkers, except that there are less pieces and more people can play.  The goal is to move all of your pieces across the board to the opposing home base.  Whoever gets all their pieces across first wins the game.  You play by sliding your pawn one space, or by jumping over your pawn or opposing player pawns.  You can double, triple, quadruple jump, just like in regular checkers.  It is a great variation on the original game of checkers.

I can easily recommend it as a great family game.  I love that it is suitable for young and old players alike and doesn't take an excessive amount of time to play.  The only thing I don't like is that it uses so many batteries, although you could play the game without batteries.  My son recommends that a version be created with magnetic pieces to help keep them on the board, but we did not have a problem with the pieces sliding around or staying put.

If you are looking for a new strategy game, that is quick and easy for all ages, and lots of fun - swing by your local Toys R Us and get one for your family. It retails for 29.99.  You can also find it online at toysrus.com, along with many other great toys and games.
